Chapter seven

Dark Snow

Alive.

No hidden sniper had been waiting outside the police station. Now, the only question was if Drew Burleson would hold true to his threat and start killing innocent people. Patrick didn’t think Drew would hold true to his threat—at least for the time being.

“What’s your location?” Patrick yelled into his cell phone as he fought to walk through knee-deep snow.

“Close to the hotel, boss,” Nolan answered.

“Stay out of sight until we get there. We’re on foot,” Patrick informed Nolan. “My jeep could have a bomb attached to it by now. Who knows? It’s safer if we stay on foot.”

“I can pick you up—”

“No good,” Patrick objected. Katey was beside him with her head ducked. The winds were deadly. “Who knows how many eyes are in the snow? We’re going to play this game my way.”

“I trust you, boss. I’ll be behind the gas station next to the hotel.”

“We’ll be there as soon as we can.” Patrick tucked his cell phone away. “How are you doing?” he called out.

“Keeping warm by thinking about the riddle,” Katey called back.

“Any progress?”

“Maybe. I’ll explain when I can.”

“Good enough.” Patrick looked around. He could see streetlights from the woods he was walking through with Katey and Leroy. Leroy was being a real soldier. Patrick was glad his friend was wearing a coat. “We’ll move up to Candy Lane and then cut south. We need to stay out of sight.”

“I understand,” Katey spoke above the wind. “I was worried someone might have been waiting outside the police station for us. Now that we’re alive, I’m very confident that Drew Burleson has no intention of killing you ... at least, not now.”

“I was right about my hunch. I hope you’re right about your hunch.”

“Me, too.” Katey kept her head down as her legs fought to walk through the snow. She felt like she was back in the north woods, lost and desperate. The sight of the glowing streetlights offered a hint of comfort. Katey was in Pine Falls, walking behind a row of gingerbread houses in a sea of thick woods hugging an icy river. The north woods were far away, and so was a creepy, cursed cabin.

Patrick settled into his own thoughts. He was frozen to the core, but what did that matter? The cold and snow were part of the job. Patrick locked his thoughts on Drew Burleson. If Katey was right, Drew’s bride-to-be was holed up at the Pine Falls Hotel. Patrick prayed Katey was right. Drew had intended to use Katey to break Patrick. Patrick was going to use Drew’s love interest to break him.

After walking and walking and walking, Patrick and Katey finally approached a dark gas station with Leroy just as the sun began to rise. Patrick spotted Nolan standing behind the gas station, hunched behind a stack of old wooden crates that were waterlogged and ready to collapse. “Let’s move.”

“I’m too frozen to move,” Katey spoke through chattering teeth. “I don’t know which is worse ... walking from the police station to the hotel or being trapped in the north woods.
